Administrator’s Corner

Bev Hesterberg

Another action-packed summer is ahead for Elioteers, and I’m very excited to experience all that’s on offer this year. Each camp has increased attendance from last year, so I’m hopeful that we’re moving in the right direction toward filling our camps again.

All of our summer deans have been busily working to recruit staff and create amazing camp experiences for Elioteers.  It will be magical! Sign up for camp and re-connect with your community. Space is available at all camps!!

What’s Next for Bev:
As for me, I’ve entered the Parade of Lasts before my January 2024 retirement: last spring board meeting, last spring newsletter articles to write, last summer camp season (as a worker bee), and so it goes. This fills me with nostalgia and happy anticipation of great things to come for me and for Eliot. In the short time I’ve been working with our incoming registrar, Calyn McLeod, she’s become much more a team member than a trainee.

Here's how things will work this summer, and going forward: Calyn will be officially training for in-camp responsibilities at August Eliot. Meanwhile, because we all came to realize that working four camps every year was a difficult ask and didn’t leave any flexibility for a registrar who might become ill or have a family emergency, we added an item to the board secretary’s job description. For one camp each year, on a rotating basis determined by the registrar and secretary, the board secretary will attend camp as the in-camp registrar. This July Eliot, Nancy West will be shadowing me to learn the ropes on that. And just note that Calyn will still be responsible for all preparatory tasks for all four camps every year, but will only need to work at three.

And of course, I know you’re wondering about the bookkeeping! Always top of your mind, eh? I will be continuing on in that role, not as paid staff, but purely as a volunteer.

I have greatly enjoyed my years of serving the Eliot Institute as Administrator, and now look forward to the time when I’ll get to enjoy the magic of Eliot, without having to wield my magician’s wand. Thank you all so much for the privilege of working for you.
