Eliot’s Eagle eye

Sees a little, knows a little, tells a little ....

... It's time to check in with Eliot's fledglings, aka our newest young adults. It's always interesting to know what path they're taking after high school. Katherine Valbuena is in the Honors Program at American University in DC, majoring in International Studies. Fiona McDaniel has flown south to UCLA, while her twin, Sam McDaniel is at the University of Washington. Emma Mac Neill headed to the east coast for the nursing program at Northeastern, and Reese Schmiesing will be studying psychology at Oregon State University.

…And in other young adult news: Shannon Wells-Moran graduated from Reed College in May 2021. With our 2021 big summer camps online this past year, I know I’ve missed lots of young adult info. Please let me know what you (or your beloved YA) are doing post-high school, and I’ll put it in the spring 2022 edition of the Eagle.

Karla and Nathan Hesterberg

Nathan Hesterberg, Cooper Jackson, David Olson, Adam Hesterberg

…Wedding bells for the Eagle who gets to expound at great length since she’s writing this article! A most joyous celebration of love happened on October 9, when Nathan Hesterberg married Karla (Cook) Hesterberg in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Could anything be better than a fall wedding in New England? It was delightful to gather with family and friends, dancing and hugs all around. Best men were Nathan’s long-time July Eliot buddies: Cooper Jackson and David Olson. It was great to see them and their significant others, Grace Jackson and Melanie Grew. Nathan’s brother, Adam Hesterberg, was also in the wedding party; and if you haven’t sussed it out by now, Bev and Tim Hesterberg are the proud parents of the groom.

Kayvon Kersten

Halima Hashi

…More new eaglets and future Elioteers! Kayvon Kersten was born in June 2021 to Chissta and Brant Kersten; his grandparents are Marianne and Ken Kersten. Skyler Kersten and Veronica Kersten welcomed their first nephew; and undoubtedly, Kimberly and James Lovelace think he’s a great-nephew!

…Sacha Wassick and Ziyad Hashi welcomed Halima Hashi to this world on September 10. We look forward to cuddles with this sweet baby at August Eliot 2022. Halima’s grandparents are Guy Wassick and Dianne Mylrea; proud uncle is Kalan Wassick.

The Eagle Weeps

Faye Sturrock

Faye Sturrock, mother of Michael Sturrock, and grandmother to Robert and Alison Sturrock passed away on July 16th.  Michael reports that her death was not related to COVID-19, but old age; she was 93 years old. Her obituary can be found at http://faye.sturrock.ca.

…On August 12, Eliot lost a cherished young adult, Alex Charles. He was the gentlest of souls: friendly, thoughtful of others, and always attentive and kind to campers younger than him. He had been vacationing with family on Salt Spring Island, when a likely seizure caused him to drown. Our hearts ache for his beloved mother, Lara Charles; brother, Ryan; and grandmother Marylke Niewenhuis. His obituary can be found at https://www.korucremation.com/obituaries/.

…The Eagle always writes this column with a tiny cloud of anxiety resting over her head.  Whose news has she missed?  She knows she’s forgotten a juicy bit of gossip that she tucked away in her brain, but forgot to write down.  She hates leaving anyone out and apologizes in advance for any omissions.
